Spondylus shell (Spondylus Princeps) was considered by most Central and South American ancient cultures to be the "food of gods" and was their Ceremonial material of choice for the elite. Spondylus shell was more valuable to their cultures than gold, and was used routinely in their economy for trade. This type of shell was difficult to obtain for the ancients, as it is a deep water species found primarily off the coast of Ecuador.
