Many of the shell items pictured on this page are from Central Florida, primarily Hillsborough, Pasco, Manatee, Volusia, Citrus and Pinellas counties. Any shell artifacts from Florida are special finds, and those in fine condition are especially scarce.

#024. A Museum quality Florida Shell Plummet measuring 3" long, and 1" wide. A classically worked bulbous symmetrical shape, and beautifully polished surface. Found on Tick Island, St Johns River, Volusia County, Florida by the late Norm Grogitsky in the 1950s. Pictured in the Central States Archaeological Society Journal, Volume 55 April 2008 Number 2.

Item: #018. A very fine grooved shell plummet from Tick Island, Volusia County, Florida measuring 1 3/4" long and 3/4" wide. Excellent symmetry and classic form. It is manufactured from the center whorl of a conch shell. Nice quality.

Item: #KP8.  A top grade Florida Shell Plummet from Maximo Beach, Pinellas County. It measures 3 3/16" long and 3/4" wide.

#017. A remarkable Safety Harbor period shell plummet/pendant made from the columella of most likely either a Queen or Lightning Whelk. About 4 1/4" long. Pendant has been beautifully smoothed and polished and is exceptionally long for it's type, with a nice suspension ring. Found in Central Florida. Former Dr Albert Welberry collection. A Museum Quality pendant which is moderately patinated. Item #CF6 
An exceptionally large Florida Shell Plummet manufactured from a Queen Conch. It is grooved for suspension and measures 6 1/4" long and 3/4" wide.

Item #204.  An exceptional shell plummet having a wide and gracefully carved suspension groove. It measures 2 5/8" long and 1 1/8" wide. This high grade plummet is ground flat on the back side as is commonly seen on Central Florida examples of expanded center plummets.

#025. A high quality Florida Shell Plummet measuring 4 3/4" long, and 7/8" wide. Exceptionally long for the type, with the surface having been extensively worked and polished. Found at Turtle Mound, New Smyrna Beach, Florida in the late 1950's.

Item #203. A beautiful example of a classic Florida shell plummet that is grooved for suspension. It measures 4 ¼" long and 11/16" wide. Appears to have been manufactured from the center column of a Queen Conch shell.

Item #225p.    A Florida Shell Plummet with a shallow suspension groove. It is from West Central Florida. Both sides have been slightly ground flat as is commonly seen on many Florida plummets. It measures 2 1/2" long and 3/4" wide.

Item #125. A heavily patinated strand of barrel style shell beads from the famous Tick Island site, St Johns River, Volusia County, Florida. Consisting of 31 beads.

Item #97.  An Oyster Shell Pendant/Spoon drilled for suspension measuring 6 1/2" long.  It was found at the Gordon Palmer site now known as "Historic Spanish Point", in Osprey, Florida.  This multi-cultural site was excavated by Ripley P Bullen in 1959, 1960, and again in 1962. The Palmer site is referenced by "The Florida Anthropological Society publication number 8, 1976. Former collection of Ralph W Burnworth.

Item #56TP.    A single drilled hole rectangular shaped Shell Pendant from Tick Island, St. Johns River, Volusia County, Florida.

A Shell Bead Bracelet with a double drilled charm found at Maximo Beach in Pinellas County, Florida.

Item: #TC19   A frame of typical Central Florida shell disk beads. These items are seldom found on Florida's coastal sites compared to other associated artifacts. They average about 1/2" in diameter.

Item: #2A7.  A rare Calusa "Lions Paw" (lyropecten nodosus) bivalve two hole Shell Gorget measuring 4 7/8" wide and 4 3/8" tall. It is drilled for suspension, and is whole and intact. This gorget was found at Key Marco, on the Southwestern coast of Florida. (500 A.D. to 900 A.D.) There were 49 atlantic yellow cowry (cyrraea acicularis) beads/tinklers found associated with the gorget. It has a Tom Davis certificate of authenticity (grade 8), and was formerly in the famous Edward Payne collection.
