The Gorgets and Pendants of Tick Island, Florida  500BC - 800AD

Many of Florida's early inhabitants lived along the St. John's River in Volusia County. One of these ancient cultural groups resided on Tick Island during the transitional St. John's I period 500BC-800AD, and produced unique pottery gorgets and pendants.

Item: #pg1
A rare 2 hole Florida Pottery Gorget measuring 4" long, and 1 1/8" wide. It is predominantly dark brown in color on the front, and brownish/black on the reverse concave side. It has faint tally marks visible on one edge.

A rare 2 hole Tick Island Florida Pottery Gorget measuring 3 9/16" long, and 1 7/16" wide. It is predominantly white in color on the front, and a mottled black and white fire marks on the reverse concave side.

A rare St John's Paste 2 hole pottery gorget measuring 2 5/8" tall and 2 5/8" wide. This shape and hole arrangement are practically unseen in pottery gorgets from Florida.

A high grade moderately large single hole Pottery Pendant measuring a very symmetrical 2 3/8" diameter. It is the classic beige/brown in color and is an excellent example of the material culture of Tick Island.

A moderately large Tick Island single hole Pottery Pendant measuring 2 1/2" tall, and 2 3/4" wide. The frontal face is black and white in color with the reverse side being mottled light buff.

A diamond shaped single hole Pottery Pendant measuring 2 1/8" wide and 1 5/8" tall. It is buff/white in color and is an unusual shape for specimen type. It was originally owned by Betty Weatherington who lived near Tick Island.

A single hole Pottery Pendant measuring a fairly symmetrical 2" diameter. It is beige/black in primary color having unusual circular designs etched in the surface patination of the face, and circular crude scratch designs on the convex surface of the reverse side. Size is average for specimen type.

A typical Tick Island single hole Pottery Pendant measuring 1 7/16" tall and 1 1/2" wide. The frontal face is mottled gray/buff in color with the reverse side being light buff. It is typical for specimen type and size.
